Tracing Descendants of British Home Children - Lois Thompson

About this event

Between 1867 and 1948, over 100,000 British children were sent to Canada to either work on farms or be put up for adoption. It is estimated that today, between 3 and 5 million Canadians can trace their ancestry to one of these children. As adults, many of these children never told their families that they had been Home Children, who were often ostracized by locals who considered them as deficient or coming from a lower class.

Lois will lead the workshop through a step by step procedure on how to look for clues, confirm your ancestor was a home child, and how to conduct the research by using English and Canadian locations along with religion and age. She will discuss the various resources available, how to contact the organizations, and finally how to find those missing relatives who are descendants of those left behind in England or put up for adoption in Canada.

Lois Chamberlain Thompson has been a VGS member for over 15 years, sits on the VGS Board of Directors as head of the News Committee, Editor of the Members Newsletter and member of the VGS Nominating and Governance committee. She has made presentations on Grosse Ile, British Home Children and Dunty the Ghost, her 7x Scottish Great Grandfather. She is wrapping up her research on her next presentation, yet to be titled. Lois lives ½ the year in Manzanillo, Mexico where she volunteers 3 days a week teaching English to adults.
