American Prohibition of the 1920s helped to create a booming industry in the illegal alcohol trade in Canada, particularly in communities like Victoria which were ideally located to support effective transportation of liquor over the hard-to-police maritime border into the United States.

Join Kate Humble for a dynamic journey into the lucrative and often dangerous world of rumrunning, featuring stories that range from isolated islands to the inner harbour; from innovative men constantly re-perfecting the speed and profile of vessels to a female lighthouse keeper looking for financial freedom; and from the grubby streets of Seattle to the high-class development of the Uplands. And of course, a liberal dose of scandal and murder is sprinkled in along the way.               

Kate Humble, shown above aboard the Uchuck, is a historian by training. After a career in museum and historic site curation and management, including at the Royal Armouries Museum in the UK, the Maritime Museum of BC, Craigdarroch Castle, and Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse, in 2021 she became the Superintendent of Gulf Islands National Park Reserve, where today she oversees 70 employees engaged in ecological and cultural heritage management.

Born and raised in the territories of the Lekwungen-speaking people in Victoria BC, she did her graduate work in medieval history at the University of Toronto. She is also known for her work with Discover the Past as a historical and ghostly tour guide haunting the streets and graveyards of the city.
