Records of the Poor: English Poor Law & Workhouses

About this event

PRESENTER: Heather Shave
Previously scheduled for 29 April 2023.
Rescheduled for 27 May 2023.

The poor are always with us – and they did leave records! Were your ancestors poor? Or did they work with the poor?

There is a good chance that some of your ancestors will appear in the records of the poor, as about 30% of the English population was considered to be poor at any one time. And surprisingly, there are often more records of the poor than the more affluent of the time.

• What are these records and what can they tell us?
• What are the differences between the records of the poor of England, Scotland, and Ireland?
• How can these records be accessed?

Learn about Removal Orders, overseers accounts, pauper apprentices, Parochial Boards, workhouses and many other records for finding your ancestors!
