VGS AT THE 2024 HIGHLAND GAMES

VGS tent at the 2024 Victoria Highland Games
If you were at the Highland Games over the long weekend on May 18th and 19th, we hope you dropped by the VGS tent to say hello.

For those who volunteered, it was a great experience thanks to Mike Woodcock and his exceptional organizing skills. When Saturday grew windy and wet, he went to Starbucks and got us coffee!

"I did make someone cry….but it was a good cry….with this record (a marriage license). Two people cried - the grand-daughter and the great-granddaughter. The young woman had dragged her mother in saying 'I want to learn more about your side of the family mom'".
- Kathie, VGS Volunteer at the Highland Games

A Message from Mike Woodcock, VGS Director

Thank you Highland Games Volunteers!

On behalf of the VGS Board, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the members who volunteered at our Society tent and at the Heritage hub presentations at the 2024 Highland Games.

We really appreciated your willingness to volunteer and amazing attentiveness to the needs of the guests. Given the weather and technology challenges of an outside environment, you did an amazing job highlighting our society and the tools we use to assist people in exploring their family history.

Our volunteers were wonderful and we were pleased with the good number of people we were able to help. Our proximity to the United Empire Loyalist tent worked well and it was great to have a location where we could interact with the public from a couple of sides of the tent.

While the technology was pretty smooth, there were a couple of lessons learned to integrate into future events. As you can see in the photo, we were able to display out new retractable banner. Thanks to Claudia for all her work in ordering, formatting and pulling off a "just in time" delivery.

The next outreach event in the planning stage is a VGS booth at the Saanich Fair on Labour Day weekend. I hope you will consider volunteering again when we start sending out our future requests for assistance.
