Mary Scott and the Brookside Guides, 1935, Saskatchewan
The Brookside Girl Guides - 1935

Listen to Mary Scott talk about their one room school house at Brookside, Saskatchewan, where she attended school in the late 1920's thru to the early 1930's. It had a wood burning furnace in the basement for the cold winter months, and was big enough to hold 25 to 30 children. The school went as high as grade 10, although the boys especially were often needed to work the farm so may not have made it past grade 8.

Mary talks about walking the two and a half miles to school each day, and traveling by horse and sleigh during the winter months when the horses weren't busy working the farm. Once they had a male teacher who boarded at a nearby farm. Recess games involved ball games, running races, tag and teeter totter in the large school yard. And the pranks at Halloween were memorable!

For more details, listen to Mary's story of her experiences at Brookside School.
