graphic showing circular process in genealogyThis year's partial day seminar brings a fascinating combination of information and insight into both traditional methods of finding genealogical information, as well as ways and reasons to delve into the new and ever changing world of DNA research.

We are delighted to welcome Dave Obee who will present two sessions. Dave is a journalist and genealogical researcher who has written a dozen books and given over 600 presentations at conferences and seminars in Canada, the United States and Australia since 1997. He is a highly sought after speaker and an expert genealogist who writes columns for Internet Genealogy magazine and Your Genealogy Today magazine, formerly Family Chronicle. Dave has also written about family history for Canada's History as well as Your Family Tree in the United Kingdom.

Dave is Editor-in-Chief of the Times Colonist in Victoria, British Columbia. He has worked as a journalist in British Columbia and Alberta since 1972.

We are also very fortunate to welcome Susanne Sulzberger, who is a Reference Archivist with the Vancouver Office of Library and Archives Canada’s (LAC) Regional Archival Program since 2009. She graduated from UBC with a BA in Religion, Literature and the arts, followed by a Master of Archival Studies degree also from UBC.

Susanne will help us to understand how to find and use the amazing collections of Library and Archives Canada and how their databases can further your research. The library is an amazing resource which holds records on a wide variety of topics including everything from military service, employment, Loyalists, land exchanges, newspapers, censuses, city directories and much more.

SEMINAR SPEAKERS, 2017

DAVE OBEE

Dave Obee, 2017 speaker, Victoria Genealogical SocietyDave Obee is a journalist and genealogical researcher who has written a dozen books and given 600 presentations at conferences and seminars in Canada, the United States and Australia since 1997.

He is Editor-in-Chief of the Times Colonist in Victoria, British Columbia. He has worked as a journalist in British Columbia and Alberta since 1972.

We are thrilled to welcome Dave to our seminar podium!  Dave will present at 2 sessions (subject to confirmation):

  • Tracing Forward to Find Distant Cousins: Your distant cousins could be the key that unlocks your DNA research. Stymied in your search for these living relatives? Trying to find other descendants of your ancestors? You need to start in the past and trace forward. Researching subsequent generations can be difficult, because people leave clues regarding where they are from, but not necessarily where they are going to. That doesn't mean it's impossible; there are plenty of sources that will help you. Many Internet sites can help -- but it pays to know which ones are essential, and which tricks to use.
  • DNA: A dozen reasons to get moving with genetic genealogy (and a few why you shouldn't): Yes, it is true: Testing your DNA and looking for genetic matches can make a huge difference in your family history research. This session includes several reasons why you should test yourself and others, as well as some cautionary thoughts. It does not include the deep science behind genetic genealogy; there will be no mention of STRs, SNPs, or centimorgans. Learn the basics of finding distant cousins, confirming ancestral links, and making the most of the vital new tool at our disposal.
